If you are being cared for in a hospital or a nursing home, you expect to be in a safe environment and you expect to be in safe hands. Unfortunately, accidents can and do happen. It is even possible that the injury sustained while in hospital is more serious than the illness you were originally admitted with.
Falls and Slips
Patients have been known to fall out of hospital beds because the sides of the bed were not put up as they should have been. Patients have fallen while trying to get out of bed unaided because they were not being assisted by the hospital staff as they should have been. It is even possible that a patient could fall whilst trying to use the toilet because the nursing staff were not available to help.
As a lot of cleaning needs to occur within a hospital, the floors can sometimes be left wet and slippery, creating an obvious risk to patients and visitors alike.
Blows to the head or body
As unlikely as it may seem, patients can sustain injuries to their head and/or body from being struck by foreign objects whilst in a hospital. Items can fall from shelves and hit you. Patients have been known to be struck by light fittings which have fallen onto their heads whilst they were undergoing surgery. Heavy surgical equipment may slip from a surgeon’s hand and be dropped onto patient’s bodies, causing the patient to sustain severe bruising.
Accidents in transit
It is possible that you may have had an accident whilst being moved around either inside or outside of the hospital. For example, you may have fallen out of your wheelchair or fallen from your bed whilst being moved between different wards in the hospital.
If you have suffered any injuries as a result of an accident within a hospital, then you may have a claim for clinical negligence. We are able to assist you with your claim.
