Figures show that health and social care providers are failing to meet the standards required of that of quality and safety
A recent report states that Care Quality Commission has found numerous problems with mismanagement of medicines, low staff numbers and poor record-keeping. 27% of these had action taken against them to improve standards.
A report on unnanounced inspections stated that 14,000 of the inspections had to instruct 3,687 organisations to improve services. Even in such cases, services had to be shut down while others were given improvement plans.
“77% of Services were providing the essential standards, compared with 72% locations in adult social care and 82% in independent healthcare.”
The inspections are worrying, there seems to be a lack of information given to those whose duty it is to care or those who are cared for.
1 in 10 failed to meet the standard staffing levels and 15% of these had poor record-keeping. The issues included people’s care being incomplete or not up to date, and either not being kept confidential and secure or not showing whether those people had been at risk.
The unnanounced inspections will now help the Care Quality Commision to use the information of concern to target those providers to look closely at this report and to take all steps necessary to protect people from poor care.
The Royal College of Nursing chief executive said:
“It is shocking that more than one in four locations inspected in this report have failed to meet even essential standards of quality and safety.
Reporters have stressed that there is no excuse for delivering anything but the best care and that the modernisation plans for social care are designed to lift the care far above minimum standards to establishing services which are among the very best in the world.
