A 22 year old man was initially admitted to hospital for a hip replacement when medical failures ocurred which left him dying due to lack of fluids causing dehydration.
The 22 year old man unfortunately died of dehydration. The client’s situation resulted in him contacting the police and informing them of the circumstances, in that he was not being given the appropriate medication which was vital to help him retain fluids by staff at the hospital.
Hours later, his condition deteriorated, despite efforts to save him for two and a half hours. He was pronounced dead at 11.20am.
This was a tragic outcome, a coroner stated that he died from dehydration contributed to by neglect by staff at the hospital. A postmortem was carried out which blamed high sodium levels caused by dehydration for his death.
Reporters stated that the 22 year old man was treated inadequately at the hospital and let down by incompetent members of staff. This was led by poor communication and lack of leadership.
Family members of the deceased were devastated by the number of missed opportunities to prevent his death.
A Dr. at the hospital has apologised sincerely and deeply regrets their actions.
The hospital have admitted civil liability for the failures of his care and they have admitted full responsibility for the coroner’s verdict.
Since the unfortunate death took place, the hospital has overcome many changes to improve the standards of staff towards patients.
