Work related dermatitis is a basically an inflammatory skin condition caused or made worse due to contact with chemical, biological or physical agents in the workplace.
It is estimated by the Health and Safety Executive that over 30,000 workers suffer with skin disease due to their place of work.
It is not contagious but can spread over the body and in some cases can be incurable.
There are 2 main types of dermatitis contracted through work they are Irritant Contact dermatitis and allergic Contact dermatitis:
Irritant Contact Dermatitis
This is caused by direct contact to a chemical irritant which damages the skin.
Allergic Contact Dermatitis
This is caused due to an allergy or hypersensitivity to a substance which already pre-exists in a person.
What are the symptoms
The skin will usually feel rough and raw followed by inflammation and itchiness. Sometimes the skin becomes cracked and blistered and painful. It affects mainly the hands, wrists and forearms although it can affect other areas of the body.
Causes of workplace dermatitis
There are several substances in the workplace which can cause dermatitis –
Irritants such as dust, enzymes and animal hair and sensitisers such as latex, soaps and other substances that cause an allergic reaction.
It can also be caused by physical elements such as excessive exposure to sun, heat, cold or water.
Who is at risk?
Those workers who are particularly at risk include engineers, cleaners, caterers, hairdressers, beauticians, painters, farmers health workers etc.
What should your employer do?
Your employer is responsible for your safety at work. It is their duty to assess, prevent and control the risks of exposure to materials which could cause dermatitis to its employee
If the employer cannot prevent exposure then they should provide suitable personal protective equipment such as gloves, boots and overalls etc.
Claiming compensation
