UK CHILD SAFETY WEEK 2023

UK CHILD SAFETY WEEK is from the 5th and 11th June 2023 to increase awareness of the risks of accidents involving children. Run by the Child Accident Prevention Trust the aim is to increase awareness about how accidents can be prevented and how to keep your children safe.

Accidents are the leading cause of death and serious injury for children and young people.  Here at What’s My Claim Worth we have dealt with many claims involving children.

Here are just a few cases we successfully settled:

A one year old boy’s mother slipped due to a loose fitting carpet whilst carrying him and fell. The young boy fractured his tibia and he was awarded £7,000.

Miss L from North Wales lacerated her thigh when she fell onto a glass coffee table which shattered. She was awarded £30,000.

Miss S, aged 2 years old at the time of the time trapped her finger in the metal arm/frame used as a support in disabled toilets in a local leisure centre. She sustained an open fracture to the tip of her right little finger which required surgery. We recovered £5,000 for Miss S.

A 3 year old girl from Surrey slipped on a highly polished floor in a ballet class and she fell on her face losing her 2 front baby teeth.  We recovered just over £5,800 for her.

A school boy aged 14 injured himself at school when a table tennis table collapsed onto his leg. He sustained severe pain, extensive bruising and a haematoma which took 11 months to heal. We successfully recovered £3,550 for his injuries.

The Child Accident Prevention Trust is a charity and works to try and reduce the number of children and young people who are killed or seriously injured in accidents. Statistics say that over 800 children from 1 – 9 years of age die each year in the UK and 1 in 8 of those deaths are due to accidents.

Another example of a claim we successfully dealt with for a child involved a client, aged 16 at the time of the accident who was involved in a serious accident on his bike. His injuries included loss of vision in one eye, significant scarring, two skull fractures, a shattered elbow requiring plates and pins and psychological injury.  Liability was denied by the Defendant but they made an offer to settle the claim for £25,000 as they knew there was a risk our client may win at Trial.  Due to the severity of our client’s injuries our Specialist Solicitor instructed a Barrister to advise on the likely value of the claim if our client were to win at a Trial. Despite the value of the claim being much more than £25,000, our client appreciated there was a risk he could lose at Trial and his Solicitor successfully managed to negotiate a higher settlement and his claim settled for £35,000. Our client was extremely happy with the outcome.

In the last year over £45,000 children under 4 years of age were admitted to hospital due to an accident.  Often children are injured due to the fault of someone else and the child can via their parent or litigation friend be able to make a claim for compensation for their injuries and any financial losses incurred due to the injury.  If you would like to see how we may be able to help your child please give us a call on 01244 568 535.
