Lifting Aircraft Tow Bar Results In Shin Injuries And £45,000 Compensation

Here at Whats My Claim Worth we have recently settled a claim for an aircraft fitter employee in the sum of £45,000 when he suffered injury to the shin which resulted in blood clots and cellulitis.

Injury to Grounds Operations Supervisor Lifting an Aircraft Tow Bar

This was a personal injury claim arising from a workplace accident involving Mr C, who was employed as a grounds operations supervisor. The accident occurred in February 2022 while Mr C was lifting an aircraft tow bar. The tow bar, which had been detached from the aircraft but was still attached to a tug, became too heavy for Mr C to hold as the tug moved forward. He fell backwards, and the tow bar wheel struck his left shin, causing injury.

Crush Injury to Left Shin Which Developed into Cellutis and Blood Clots

Mr C sustained a crush injury to his left shin, which initially resulted in a small cut and swelling. This developed into cellulitis, blood clots, and an abscess. He also contracted COVID-19 while in hospital. Further complications included a provoked pulmonary embolism due to surgery and superficial clots to his upper left arm. He required hospitalisation and was detained for 11 days.

What were the issues?

The main issues in the case included:

  • Complexity of the medical evidence, involving multiple experts and the risk of future complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • Causation, as there were complicating medical factors and the need to prove the link between the accident and subsequent medical conditions.
  • The case was considered due to its complexity and the need for a claim for provisional damages, given the risk of future deterioration (e.g., further DVT).
  • There were also standard risks in personal injury litigation, such as limitation, credibility, and the need for robust medical evidence.

Mr C said “I would highly recommend Oliver & Co and the team for their professionalism and dedication shown to me throughout.  I would have no hesitation recommending their services to anyone who needs expert legal help.
