PEDESTRIAN ROAD SAFETY

More than 270,000 pedestrians lose their lives on the world’s roads. Millions of pedestrians are injured on our roads, some left with permanent disabilities.  In 2021, Gov.UK confirmed 361 pedestrians were killed in Great Britain, whilst 5032 were seriously injured and 11, 261 slightly injured. All staggering statistics and preventable. At What’s My Claim Worth we know that pedestrians are one of the most vulnerable road users and extra care must be taken if you are a pedestrian or if you are in control of a vehicle where pedestrians are.  The Highway Code gives rules for pedestrians and guidance on crossing roads and using crossings:

1. When crossing or waiting to cross a junction, other traffic should always give way to pedestrians.

2. If people have started to cross and the traffic wants to turn into a road, the people crossing have priority and the traffic should give way.

3. People driving, riding a motorcycle or bike must also give way to people on the zebra crossing and people walking and cycling on a parallel crossing.

4, Cyclists should give way to pedestrians on shared use cycle tracks and to horse riders on bridleways.

5. Only pedestrians may use the pavement.

6. Pedestrians also includes wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

7. Pedestrians may use any part of the road and use cycle tracks as well as the pavement, unless there are signs prohibiting pedestrians.

Here are some tips to keep you safe:

  • Always look left, right and left again before crossing

  • Always wear bright colours during the day and at night wear reflective clothing/items

  • Make sure you obey all signs at all times day or night

  • If a pavement is not available always walk facing the traffic.

  • Use pavements if they are available.

  • Watch out for vehicles turning or backing up as these may not be able to see you.

  • Always use pedestrian crossings.

  • Before starting your journey prepare a safe walking route.

  • Only cross roads at designated spots, i.e. pedestrian crossings or where it is safe.

  • When out in the dark, stay on well lit pavements.
