Why our clients love us.

What counts as a public place?

A public place can include areas such as roads and pavements, to shops and buildings.

Accidents you may sustain in a public place commonly include:

  • Slips in a supermarket/shop;
  • An accident in a restaurant caused by poor state of repair;
  • Tripping over a hole in the road;
  • Injuring yourself due to a piece of faulty gym equipment;
  • Falling objects: where products or other materials are not safely or correctly placed;
  • Defective trolleys that have resulted in cuts or back injuries.

How much is a public liability claim worth?

The amount of damages awarded in a public liability claim can vary. Claim values are largely affected by the severity of the injury, how long symptoms last for and how the injury was caused.

If you are injured at work whilst carrying out your duties, always make sure that you report your accident.

Your employer should have an accident book and the details of your accident and your injury should be written in this.

If you are working away from your employer’s premises, your accident and injury should be detailed in the accident book of the premises you are at and in your employer’s accident book.

Your employer is also required to have insurance in place to cover any claims for compensation that are made by any employees who suffer an injury at work.

It is the insurers who will pay the compensation on behalf of your employers as opposed to the employer paying directly.

ACCIDENTS IN PUBLIC PLACES:
THINGS TO REMEMBER

If you are injured at work, you should always report it to your employers and record the circumstances of the accident in the accident book.

If you do wish to claim compensation for an injury sustained at work, you have three years from the date of the accident to make a claim.

If you were under the age of 18 years at the time of the accident, then the three-year period begins to run from your 18th birthday.

If an injury due to an accident or work-related disease is not immediately apparent or takes time to develop, the three year time period does not begin to run until you are aware of the injury.

Your employer has a legal requirement to have Employers Liability Insurance in place to cover the cost of paying out compensation to employees who are injured due to accidents at work.
