How do you know if you are suffering from whiplash?
Whiplash is a type of injury that occurs in the neck often due to a car accident. This can be caused when a person’s head is moved forwards and backwards at speed, damaging the muscles and ligaments in the front and back of the spine.
The most common symptoms of whiplash are headaches and neck pain. Other injuries can include pain in the spine affecting the disc, bleeding in the ears, blurred vision, inability to turn your neck due to stiffness or even unable to turn your head from side to side.
There are two types of whiplash injuries. These are known as acute whiplash and chronic whiplash.
→ Symptoms of acute whiplash
- Neck pain
- Tenderness of the back
- Loss of movement
- Lower back pain
- Numbness in the arms and hands
- Difficulty in swallowing food
- Tinnitus (The perception of noise in one ear, both ears or inside the head)
- Vertigo (The sensation that you are moving or spinning whilst standing)
→ Symptoms of chronic and severe whiplash
- Neck pain
- Persistent headaches
- Aching pain
- Pain in shoulders causing numbness to hand and arms
- A reduction in balance
- Sleep deprivation
- Poor concentration
In the case of a chronic whiplash, symptoms persist for a long time. It is important that your injuries are treated properly to prevent this. In severe cases, symptoms can persist from 3 weeks to 12 months.
You should visit your GP if you suffer with any of the symptoms above.

We recently settled a claim for our client who sustained whiplash injuries causing back pain and dizziness he also injured his right knee and wrist.
Together with our client’s claim for personal injury, we also claimed car hire charges that our client had incurred as a result of his road traffic accident.
Liability rested fully with the defendant however, their insurers disputed liability and brought a claim against our client for their losses. We pursued a counter claim for our client’s losses arising from the accident.
An offer was made by the defendant’s solicitors to settle on a 50/50 basis which we rejected. A further offer of 75/25 was made in our favour which again we rejected.
The claim went to trial where the Judge heard evidence from our client, the defendant and witnesses. The judge dismissed the defendant’s claim in full, and found in our client’s favour in full. Our client was awarded damages in full.
Our Client received £2,637 in settlement of his claim. His costs and disbursements were paid for by the Defendants Insurers as we were acting for him on a No Win No Fee basis.
