What caused my internal organ injury?

There are many circumstances in which an internal organ injury could occur. These include:

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF AN INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY?

It is not until you receive an internal organ injury that you realise how much they can impact your life. Those with internal organ injuries often face life-changing and potentially life-shortening injuries. They can experience extreme and debilitating pain from damage to internal organs and subsequent treatment which could mean time off work is needed or they are no longer able to work as they are unable to perform their job properly. Day to day activities can become complicated and even impossible based on the severity of the injury.

Psychological damage can also result from internal organ injuries, cancer, e.g. mesothelioma, or loss of a reproductive system which can leave you with clinical depression as these could mean a life-altering or life-limiting outcome.

A spleen injury is a physical injury to the spleen, an organ located in the upper abdomen. The spleen regulates the blood supply in your body and also helps support your immune system.

An injury to your spleen can have life-altering consequences. The spleen contains special white blood cells to help destroy bacteria and help your body fight infections. It also makes red blood cells and helps remove, or filter old ones from circulation. If the spleen becomes damaged or removed, your health risks increase dramatically as the risk of infection and anaemia increases.

An injury to the spleen puts you at risk of bleeding and heavy bruising, as the white blood cells in your body are used to make platelets which is what is used to form clots and stop bleeding.

Psychological damage can also result from spleen injuries. The increased risk of contracting infections can leave you with severe anxiety and could lead to depression.

In a personal injury claim there are two categories of losses that we can claim compensation for:

  1. Compensation for your pain, suffering and loss of amenity, known as ‘general damages’, to compensate for the direct effects of the accident. Our Specialist Solicitors can advise on the likely amount of compensation that can be recovered. Please click here to use our Claims Calculator to see how much a claim for your injury may be worth.
  1. Compensation for out of pocket expenses, known as ‘special damages’, to compensate for financial losses including lost wages, care and assistance, medical costs and other expenses.

If the injury was sustained following an accident at work, depending on the type of accident and where it occurred, it should be reported as soon as possible to your Manager or Supervisor of the organisation and entered in the Accident Book. Witness details should be obtained and all relevant paperwork should be retained. Pictures should also be taken if applicable. Paperwork and receipts in relation to any medical treatment and expenses, including travel expenses, should be retained also.
